Over the next academic year, the whole school will be building on its ongoing commitment to the environment by taking part in the Eco-Schools Award Scheme - a world-wide initiative which encourages children to take responsibility for the future of their environment and helps reduce the environmental impact of schools on their communities.
The school achieved the Scheme's Bronze award by the end of October and has now set its sights on reaching the Silver and Green Flag in the next few months. As the scheme is rooted in community participation, we warmly welcome any parents or community members who would like to get involved! This can be done by joining our Eco-Schools Action Team, or sharing any skills related to the themes of waste, energy, water, school grounds, biodiversity, global perspective, transport and healthy living. You don't have to be an expert in any of these areas - just someone keen to make a difference! If you are interested in joining the team or learning more about the award please speak to Mrs Brautigam.
We are already recycling our food waste into compost, turning off lights when they are not needed and car sharing.

Eco school council
We have now achieved the Silver Award and are working towards the
Green Flag Award.
We held our first Green Day on Monday 5th November. The children took part in a range of activities.
Here are some photographs of some of the activities.
Berkley School is an Eco School and we held a special ‘Green Day’ where we focussed on sustainable energy sources. All three classes spent time investigating wind power and made their own windmills and wind turbines. It was a particularly blustery day so everyone had a wonderful time outside watching their windmills working!!! We also had workshops on solar power. Children designed and made solar powered boats and tried them out in a tank of water. We were able to keep all the solar panels so we will be able to spend lots of time investigating solar power further in the future!
Our main focus for the Silver Award was the Berkley Bag which was designed by the children. We also had an Energy Audit.
