Music

Mrs Randall teaches music to the children. They listen, sing, compose and make all types of music. She also teaches the recorder to Year Three and Year Four. The children play the recorder during our assemblies and other School occasions.  There is also a Key Stage One Choir and a Key Stage Two.

KS2 are learning a stringed instrument with Mr Jenkins - either the violin, cello or Double Bass as part of the Somerset Wider Opportunities Music programme.

Uniform

The school colours are a burgundy sweat shirt with the School logo on it. We encourage children to wear a white shirt and grey trousers/skirt. Please can you send the children to school in proper shoes. We feel that a uniform is important as it gives the children a sense of identity and creates a good impression when we have visitors or go out on visits. When you buy new P.E. kit, please could you buy the school colours i.e, white T-shirt, navy shorts/ tracksuit bottoms. All uniform and P.E kit should be named. All uniform enquiries can be made in the office to Mrs V.Thomson.

The School has a book bag in the School colours  which can also be obtained from the school.

We always encourage children to read every day at home, we hope that you will be able to spare some time to share a book with your child whether they are in Reception or Year Four.

Swimming and Gym

On Thursday morning the Reception Class do PE. The remaining classes go to Frome Leisure Centre where they have swimming or gym lessons. The children swim in different groups depending on ability. They are awarded certificates as they progress from one group to another. They start with water confidence and 5 and 10 metre certificates moving on into the larger pool. The more able swimmers have different challenging swimming targets to achieve. They are also taught life saving skills. All children, when they leave Berkley School can swim.

Gymnastics takes place in the bowls hall at the Leisure Centre.  The individual year groups start with warm up games and then move on to learning specific gymnastic moves in each session.  Certificates can be obtained by the children showing the skills that they have learnt.

The School Council

We have a school council consisting of  children from each class to represent the ideas and thoughts of the children who come to our School.

Absences

If a child is absent from school we ask that you please contact us on the first day of their absence so that we know why they are not in school. If they are likely to be ill for a long period then it is possible for teachers to provide some work .
If you are planning a holiday which coincides with school term then please make sure you fill in a holiday form which can be obtained from the office.
